In Roman Britain, Canterbury was called "Durovernum".
The Roman heritage of the city can be seen in the Roman museum located in the centre of Canterbury, with a remarkable mosaic pavement that was found after the war under the streets of the city. The new museum was built as part of the development here in 1991.
